Ask the gardener: Hedges – Regarding a replacement for your Leylandii hedge my immediate reaction is to plant a Laurel Hedge – Prunus Laurocerasus (Cherry Laurel) or a small leaf variety is the Portuguese Laurel – Prunus Lusita.

Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ is a more formal, tidier looking variety of the Portugal Laurel. Its longer and narrower leaves grow on red-purple stems giving it an interesting appearance and providing some additional colour during the year.
