Magnolia × loebneri, commonly called Loebner magnolia, is a deciduous hybrid magnolia (M. kobus x M. stellata). It is a small tree typically growing to 20-30’ tall with a rounded crown. It is more often grown in a multi-trunked form that as a single trunk tree.

Perhaps the hardiest of magnolias. I have always admired a mature plant that sits at the end of a dairy barn not far from the Round Church in Richmond. It always puts on a magnificent show when it blooms with masses of white flowers in spring.

The hybrid M. x loebneri was derived from two distinct white flowered species in Germany sometime before 1910. One parent is M. kobus of Japan, introduced in 1865 and the other is M. stellata, the star magnolia also introduced from Japan around the same time.
